The machine builders at Turin, Italy-based OMG srl are introducing the next generation of its best-selling, servo-driven thermoformer.

The PVE 64 Series gives buyers the choice of three form area sizes instead of one and has upgraded technology, according to Edward Husvar, an OMG marketing spokesman.

"The updated proprietary 'Swing Out' 40-ton form press relocates from inside machine structure to outside of machine structure in no more than a few minutes and is ready for quick and simple tool loading and tool unloading," Husvar said in an email. "This dramatically reduces valued machine downtime."

Husvar is president of Lincoln Park, N.J.-based Emory Group LLC, which sells OMG products.

The OMG PVE 64 Series produces a variety of clear and opaque packages, such as blisters, clamshells, trifolds, trays and cups for food, medical device parts, cosmetics, consumer products, hardware, electrical goods, automobile parts tote-trays, personal protective equipment and ESD trays for circuit boards. The PVE 64 Series also can accept existing tooling packages from the competitor's thermoformers, which Husvar said is an attractive feature for customers.

"The buyer does not have to start off building new tooling for the PVE 64 Series," he said.

As an option, a two-roller preheater can be integrated with the PVE 64's standard three indexes of top and bottom rectangular ceramic preheaters.

"There are times when a buyer needs five indexes of preheat to correctly thermoform polypropylene, for example, to achieve cycle speeds of 30 CPM [cycles per minute]," Husvar said.

The heart of the PVE 64 Series is the Elektra II-brand process controller, Husvar also said. A touchscreen allows easy setup and supervisory control of all stations from form press to parts handling as well as a data library.

The PVE 64 Series also provides full control of finished parts. A parts stacker, which prepares the finished parts to be placed into robotic handling systems, is standard equipment, while the automation that handles parts is optional.

Founded in 1965, OMG is a family-owned business managed by Roberto Fretta, the son of the founder. The company has more than 2,000 machines in the global market. OMG began building all servo-driven thermoformers in 1994 and later added parts handling systems, up and down stackers, and modules for single- and double-robotic-parts transfer systems.

"OMG's next venture took them into designing and building turnkey extrusion and thermoforming systems, from resin to finished product — a full circle of achievements," Husvar said.

OMG operates out of 130,000 square feet of production space in Italy. The company also has a 17,000-square-foot facility in Arlington, Texas, for service, parts and demonstrations of an OMG all-servo-driven thermoformer operating under production conditions. OMG also has three technical service employees in three U.S. locations.
